UCT Teaching and Learning Conferences

The annual UCT Teaching and Learning Conference is an opportunity for interested members of the UCT community to come together to focus exclusively on the teaching and learning aspects of the university. A key issue for academia is accountability in relation to the work we do as teachers.  While there are various mechanisms, including student evaluation and HR processes with line managers, a conference such as this is valuable opportunity to engage in an exchange of mutual commitment and accountability across the large landscape of practises which includes the efforts for teaching and learning of educators, researchers, professional staff, tutors, students and support staff.  The foregrounding of the work of the teaching award winners allows us to highlight examples of excellent teaching to which we can all aspire and look to for inspiration.

Who presents?

The conference welcomes submissions from all those members of the UCT community involved with teaching or the study of teaching in a higher education, including, but not limited to, lecturers, tutors, teaching and lab assistants, postgraduate education students etc. Presentations are welcome from all faculties and departments.

A brief conference history

The conference began as a symposium in 2011, and has grown steadily since then, recording as many as 398 attendees and 75 presentations in a single year. The growth of annual UCT Teaching Learning Conference in attendance and scope reflects the commitment by UCT staff and leadership to teaching excellence. This conference showcases and celebrates excellent teaching and provides a space to discuss shared teaching and learning challenges across the whole institution. This includes highlighting teaching interventions  in relation to such perennial concerns as graduate attributes, throughput, graduate employability and contributions to knowledge building. This conference seeks to strengthen the scholarship of teaching and learning in our local context and to facilitate peer learning among UCT staff who teach and support student learning.
