Associate Professor Laura Czerniewicz, new Director of CILT.
On 4 August 2014 the recently formed Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT) formally announced the appointment of Associate Professor Laura Czerniewicz as its new director. CILT colleagues are excited that she will assume the full-time directorship with immediate effect. Until recently, Laura led the University's Open Scholarship Initiative, OpenUCT. She leaves following the successful launch of the OpenUCT Institutional Repository by UCT's VC, Dr Max Price on 31 July.
A champion of open scholarship, she makes no secret that teaching and learning is not business as usual. By a virtual wheel of fortune, CILT is making waves in the popular press with the announcement that UCT will be the first African university to host its own MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) next year. Laura is sure to feel right at home.
Laura played a key role in arranging the sign of the Berlin Declaration to Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities and the drafting of UCT’s Open Access Policy. She also comes to CILT as a prominent speaker and researcher with a track record of international publications on topics which range from ICTs in Higher Education to Open Access.
Associate Professor Jeff Jawitz, former Acting Director of CILT said, “Having Laura back on the team as Director will be a huge boost to CILT. The new unit is ready to lift off and grow to its full potential. Laura is just the right person to help us achieve this.’
CILT welcomes Laura and looks forward to her direction and guidance through the ever-changing higher education landscape and helping the unit to become a voice of innovation on teaching and learning from the Global South.
