Dr Cheryl Brown elected to Apereo Board of Directors
A big congratulations to CILT’s very own Dr Cheryl Brown who has been elected to the Apereo Foundation Board of Directors. The announcement was made at the 2016 Open Apereo Conference in New York City. The Apereo Foundation supports and develops software that is used in thousands of educational institutions across the globe. The Apereo Board is responsible for overseeing the community of projects, expanding the community of organisations and people interested in open solutions for education, and helping new projects join Apereo; being selected as a member is an honour.
As a Senior Lecturer in the Learning Technologies Team within CILT and an NRF rated researcher, Dr Brown is highly respected in the field of e-learning. Her interests centre around access to ICTs and how they facilitate or inhibit students’ participation in learning. In the past few years she has looked more closely at the role technological devices such as laptops and cellphones play in students learning in a developing context and the development of students' digital literacy practices. Commenting on her latest achievement Dr Brown said, “I am looking forward to this opportunity to contribute to the Apereo community and bring learning and teaching issues to the fore.”
Alongside Dr Brown, UCT was also represented at Open Apereo 2016 by Dr Leanne Scott and Mr Stefan Brit who received an Apereo Learning and Teaching Award (ATLAS) 2016 for for their entry “Teaching Introductory Statistics using a Blended Mode of Instruction at the University of Cape Town (UCT)”.
